Professor Olugbemisola Mopelola Omoegun of the Department of Educational Foundation, Faculty of Education will deliver the 14th Inaugural Lecture of the University in the 2011/2012 Academic Session on Wednesday, July 11, 2012.
The lecture entitled, Counselling Is For All, And Behold: The Counsellor Is Here To Help will hold in the Main Auditorium, Akoka at 4.00 pm. The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rahamon Bello will preside over the lecture. Members of the University Community and the public are cordially invited.
Born on May 29, 1951 in Ipetu-Ijesa, Osun State, Professor Olugbemisola Mopelola Omoegun is a thorough-bred alumnus of the University of Lagos. She earned a Nigeria Certificate in Education in June, 1974; a First Degree in Education in July, 1978; Masters Degree in Education in July, 1983 and Doctoral Degree in Guidance and Counselling in December, 1988, all from the University of Lagos. She also holds a Teachers’ Grade II Certificate from the Baptist Women’s Teachers’ Training College, Abeokuta (December, 1969).
The Afin-Akoko, Ondo State indigene started her teaching career in January, 1970 as a Class Teacher and Boarding House Mistress at Baptist Girls’ Primary School, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta. She joined the services of the University of Lagos as Lecturer II in 1989. She was appointed Lecturer I in 1992, Senior Lecturer in 1998, Associate Professor in 2002 and Professor on October 1, 2008.
Professor Omoegun who is a member of the University Senate has served the University in several academic and administrative capacities including Head, Department of Educational Foundation (August, 2004 to July, 2006); UNILAG Counselling Centre Management Committee and Faculty of Education Sanitation and Beautification Committee (2000 to 2008).
She has also served as a member of several Committees and Boards. These include: AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis (ATM) Committee (2003 – 2007); Management Board, International School Lagos (ISL); University Library Committee; Faculty of Education Fund Raising Committee (2004 till date) and Matron, Faculty of Education Students’ Fellowship (2005 - 2008)
Outside the University of Lagos, Professor Omoegun is a Special Adviser on Education to the Diocesan, Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos Mainland, Anglican Communion, Church of Nigeria (August, 2006 till date); President, Nigeria Association of University Women (2005 – date); President, Lagos Chapter of Counselling Association of Nigeria (1991 – 2006) and Member, Certification and Licensure Board, Counselling Association of Nigeria (2004 – date). She has served as Chairman, Editorial Board of Christain Mothers (an annual magazine for the Anglican Communion, Lagos Diocese); National Vice-President, Counselling Association of Nigeria (2000 – 2004); Secretary, Mothers Union of All Saints’ Church, Yaba (1985 – 2005) and Social Secretary (1989 – 1992)/Welfare Secretary (1992 – 1998)/Vice-President, Ladies Christain Circle, All Saints’ Anglican Church, Yaba (2003 - 2007).
The renowned counsellor is a recipient of many awards and certificates including Fellow, Counselling Association of Nigeria (August, 2005); Golden Award for Outstanding Contribution to Educational Development in Nigeria; Women Achievers Award; Rotary Merit Service Award by Rotary International District 911 Nigeria; Distinguish Service Award by Rotary Club of Alagbado; Certificate of Recognition for Significant Contribution to Societal Development through Counselling and Awards of Recognition for Contribution to Academic Development in Lagos State by various schools such as Goodwill Secondary School, Ikorodu; Vivian Fowler Memorial College for Girls, Oregun; Konsol Private School and Little Schoars Private School.
The don has published over fifty (50) publications to her credit in books and articles in national and international learned journals. She is currently working on a research project entitled: Information Technology and Counselling Practice in Lagos State Schools, Prospects and Challenges.
Professor Omoegun is happily married and blessed with children.
