UNILAG DECLARES THREE DAYS OF MOURNING FOR ITS DEPARTED VICE-CHANCELLOR

The University of Lagos has declared three days of mourning in honour of its late 10th Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe, FAS, who passed on at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in the early hours of Saturday, May 12, 2012.

During the mourning period, which commences from Monday, May 14 to Wednesday, May 16, 2012, all lectures, all statutory meetings and other University activities at its three campuses (Akoka, Yaba and Idi-Araba, including ISL and Staff School) will not hold.

According to hospital sources, Professor A.B. Sofoluwe suffered a Heart Attack while in his office at the Department of Computer Science but managed to call his doctor from the Medical Centre who came to his rescue and brought him to the Medical Centre in an ambulance and subsequently transferred him to LUTH where he was diagnosed as having Myocardial Infarction. He was resuscitated before being transferred to the High Dependency Unit in Ward E8 of LUTH. Unfortunately, he suffered a second Heart Attack and all efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Post mortem examination has since been carried out and this has confirmed the cause of death to be of Cardiac Origin.

The University authorities urge all staff to observe the mourning period and continue to pray for the University. Condolence Registers have been opened at: Senate House, Julius Berger Hall, The Vice-Chancellor’s Lodge, Distance Learning Institute (DLI), School of Postgraduate Studies, all  Faculties and Halls of Residences.

Meanwhile, the University has set up a high powered Burial Committee headed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & Research), Professor Babajide Alo, FAS to work out the burial arrangements.
