DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
The Department was one of the three departments that constituted the Faculty of engineering of the University of Lagos, when it was founded in 1964. It was founded largely with UNESCO’s assistance in the form of teaching experts and teaching facilities.
The establishment of the Department in Lagos is most appropriate and beneficial to the national economy since Lagos is the center of engineering activities in Nigeria. The location also makes the Department an ideal training center for engineers on account of the existence of relatively closely located industries that offer practical training facilities.
The Senate has recently approved the establishment of a degree programme in Marine Engineering.
The postgraduate studies have a wide range of research activities that include Solar Energy Harness, Mechanical Vibrations. Energy Conversion and Utilization and Power Plants.
Other areas include: Applied Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, Production Engineering, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning, Control Systems Engineering.
The Department has a total of eight laboratories supporting both its undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The laboratories are:
(1) Stress Analysis Laboratory;
(2) Mechanics of Machines laboratory;
(3) Industrial Engineering Laboratory;
(4) Metrology Laboratory;
(5) Thermodynamics Laboratory;
(6) Fluid Mechanics Laboratory; and
(7) Models Laboratory
FUTURE PROPOSAL
In the nearest future: the University will establish 2 No. (two) separate departments from the current Department of Mechanical Engineering viz:
* The Department of Mechanical Engineering
* The Department of Marine Engineering
